2012 Artist Goals

The time of the year has come to reflect upon what has been accomplished (see my recent post - 2011 Progress Update) and what should be planned for the following year. Below you will find the list of what I am striving to accomplish in 2012 with my artwork.

Artist Goals 2012: To continue to find avenues to learn, produce and display artwork.

Learn:

·         Continue to increase my knowledge of various painting techniques and styles through online courses and/or local workshops.

·         Start a monthly painting challenge where we will focus on a particular technique or subject to explore.

·         Start a “create together” day once a month for the members of Arts Northeast to learn from each other, and perhaps have guest participants to increase our knowledge.

Produce:

·         Create a defined body of work (10-20 pieces) using a theme.

·         Create up to 30 pieces of artwork for 2 exhibitions in 2012 with Arts Northeast.

·         Spend more time sketching/drawing by completing one small piece per week.

·         Complete more plein air paintings.

·         Complete several winter/Christmas theme artwork.

Display:

·         Increase my online presence through use of facebook, my website, my blog and online art stores, such as Kijiji, Fine Art America, Esty, and Zazzle.

·         Explore venues for two exhibitions with Arts Northeast.

·         Explore venues for exhibitions outside of the Northeast Avalon.

·         Submit artwork to juried and non-juried art competitions/exhibits locally and globally.

Fun Fact Friday on a Tuesday - Trees

I've been very bad at keeping my Fun Fact Fridays going....hopefully 2012 will be better!

But I had to share this tip before I forget it...courtesy of Art Apprentice Online....

When painting trees, paint the outer branches with transparent paint, this keeps them soft and delicate.

2011 - Progress Update

Well, 2011 is almost over....I didn't get to post my third quarter update with exhibits and vacation taking over....so here's my update for the second half of 2011....up to and including the rest of December. I have to get busy this week with my 2012 plan...I have a lot of ideas already in my head, so they need to just be written down in a logical manner.....

My statement for 2011..."My focus will now get back to what it originally was...the production, marketing and sale of my own artwork. Most of my goals for 2011 can be subdivided into three main categories - learning activities, productivity, and visibility:"

Learning Activities:

Increase my knowledge of various painting techniques and styles through courses online and/or participate in local workshops or classes - I have signed up for a couple of online courses, so some progress here. Ok, so I signed up but haven't had time to work on them. Tomorrow is hopefully a holiday, so I hope to do some painting and tackle one of the courses. I was able to spend some time on some of my online courses, no local workshops or classes have really interested me, except one which clashed with something else I had happening, so hopefully I'll be able to do that one in 2012.

Work on further expanding my existing classes and workshops offered to students - Well, slight hiccup in this one....I had intended on continuing my classes with the City of St. John's past my current schedule which finishes in May....short version, the City seems to be changing some of it's rules and I do not agree with how they are handling things...so I have decided to move on in the fall. I will be increasing classes of my Artist's Choice and various Workshops in "the Shed" instead. Not exactly my original plan, but we'll have to go with it. I have scheduled 2 nights for Artist's Choice (which one is full and the other almost full) as well as 4 Workshops for the fall in "the Shed". I have loaded up on Workshops for the Fall as many students do not like to venture out in the Winter. I have now expanded to 3 classes each week, plus workshops. I think 3 nights will be my limit, especially as I have a lot planned for 2012. My schedule for the winter is posted, classes are almost full (registration started last week) and I have my spring/summer schedule figured out as well. I just have to figure out which workshops I'll plan for the spring.

Research local art groups/organizations to determine benefits of memberships and learning opportunities - VANL looks promising, but have decided to hold off on joining until 2012. Status quo. I've done some research, but nothing is striking me right now....I'll speak with my art friends to get their opinions and decide if I'll sign-up anywhere for 2012 to give it a shot. 

Complete the studio and hold grand opening in the Fall - Now that the warmer weather is here (wishful thinking I suspect), work will continue in "The Shed". Work on the studio is continuing and we now have running water! Progress! Almost ready for more paint and then onto the ceiling. The studio is almost complete...just a few baseboards and trim left....that should be finished during the Christmas break. Fred did a wonderful job on the banister at the top of the stairs!

Productivity:

Create a defined body of work using a theme of my choice for the purpose of an art show. At least 8 major paintings should be produced for this endeavour - Well, no theme unless you count lack of a theme, a theme! I have changed this goal a little which was a result of the formation of our own art group. My loose working terms right now are textures....The art show is booked for late July-early August for 3 weeks, so more painting must be completed. If I get 6 new paintings done for this show, I'll be happy. The show is on now! 8 major paintings were produced and I also decided to put in 2 former paintings that I previously did not wish to sell....time does wonders! The next theme is nature, so I'm well in my comfort zone there. Second exhibition was titled "Window into Nature" at MUN Botanical Garden in October - 5 new pieces painted for that one for a total of 16 pieces on display. I exceeded my goals for this one!

Create at least one painting a month that is not part of the defined body of work or commissions - Month 4 and I'm just finishing off paintings 3 and 4 (There was one commission in there too). So on track. 8 new paintings were completed for the show, which doesn't include 2 others that I had completed early in the year that are going in the next show. 5 new pieces painted for the second show, so I have a total of 15 new originals produced this year!

Create more artwork that is focused on the market demands - Right now I've been picking subjects I like, so I'm not really focusing on market demands...YET.....seems at least one of my counterparts will be joining me at a Christmas Fair, so I decided today I have to paint some Christmas/Winter subjects....so sort of on track? I have an idea, sort of a theme...maybe I need to revise the goal above....it's a secret right now though..... Ok, so decided against the Christmas fair with so much going on with exhibits/sales and teaching. Apparently need to sleep sometime. Haven't started a winter painting yet...must find one to do soon. Haven't really done that, but have started research and have some firm painting ideas for 2012...a theme for myself as well, on top of the theme we will have for our Arts Northeast exhibitions.

Visibility:

Increase my online presence through use of my website, facebook, blog, and venturing into sales online - Website updated and PayPal added, Blog is going well so far, Facebook has my Blog updates posted, and have secured one local online company, working on another local one that I have a commitment from, and also checking out some global print-on-demand sites.... Hoping to do some work in these areas in the next few weeks.... Didn't get to the global print-on-demand sites this year...major effort will go into this for 2012.

Increase my advertising for commissions using online advertising methods - Did post some online ads...got a few students, but no commissions. Will post ads again online for the fall.... Did not repost any ads for commissions....did receive one through other means though....

Creation of an artist's group who will be focused on increasing our visibility and also in sharing meaningful critiques and knowledge - Well underway, a somewhat slow start, but we have a group of 4 now and have our first show booked (mentioned above) and working on 1-2 more for this year. Have a plan for a proposal for 2012. Very Excited...more details to follow. First show is in progress, second show is booked, third show still possible....will decide that in a few weeks. Second show completed, decided against the third show for this year...pushed that one into 2012 perhaps in Gander....

Participate in more public showcases - I have a few venues secured....looking at a few more..... Truly haven't gotten to this yet..... This one got by the wayside, so I'll add this to the "to do" list for 2012.

Submit artwork to juried and non-juried art competitions in the Province and globally - Not yet. Deadline for Arts and Letters is in September...will enter this year. Submitted to a few....waiting to hear back. Creating a calendar for deadlines for 2012 to make it easier to plan for submissions.

So 2011 has been quite productive, even if I didn't get everything on my list completed...a great start...the Arts Northeast group has been wonderful and we are looking forward to what 2012 brings...

Sketching & Coloured Pencils

I don't get a lot of time to sketch or use coloured pencils, but a 3 hour car ride last Friday evening provided some opportunity to get a few things done...started off with nothing really fancy, just some sketches, then got into some colours....

Snowman came next.....



Then started a funky little tree...to be continued later.....

And then candycane joy....

And what would I do if I didn't do a flower of some sort! LOL A tulip....

It was fun and I hope to more next year...perhaps during lunch on those cold and snowy days at work!

Fall was fun....now onto Winter it seems...

Fall was fun because classes had started again, then we went for our annual vacation (this time California, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico), then home for a week to try and catch up, then away to Ontario for work (and got to see some relatives, but not all). Now I'm back and trying to catch up some more, especially with Christmas right around the corner! I think I may have almost all of my Christmas shopping finished, which is good since next weekend we are heading to Glenwood to visit good friends who are home and then my in-laws will be out the next weekend, so I had to get it done!

So, no time to paint yet...have completed my 2012 art calendars - 3 versions this year - general artwork, and 2 themed (flowers and landscapes). They are ready to pre-order. New for this year are hand-painted glass blocks. And getting the usual assortment of art cards and art coasters ready for sale. I'm bringing examples to new work and old work and also getting ready for the 2nd annual Christmas fair in Torbay on December 11. And 3 nights of teaching for Nov/Dec classes.....no painting time for me it seems for a bit....

I had wanted to get some Christmas paintings done this year, but with Arts Northeast having 2 exhibitions this year, it just didn't happen...I guess I'll do it for next year.

Classes Have Started

First week of classes have come and gone....good to see some familiar faces and some new ones too! Everyone seems to like the work we've done in the studio and the new set-up of the tables.

Looks like we will have to add an extra session for November! If you are interested, just let me know!

Challenges - They will help you grow

So we had another meeting of our group Arts Northeast last night. We talked art, our upcoming show, our current running show, and puppy (Taz had to visit with the visitors!)....

Among other things we've decided to do...first of which was a plein air session last weekend.....a challenge. Something we all have to paint as an exercise to grow as artists. Just a small piece.

So we elected Randy to pick first. We have to paint something using our non-dominant hand. Sounds bad, but I'm sure as time and challenges go on, we'll be more creative (which means the subjects will get harder and harder!). This one is due in just about 2 weeks.

Good news is, I have done that before. When I was teaching One Stroke at Micheals, I knew there would be a difference between those who were right handed and those who were left handed. Not anything bad, but the natural direction would be opposite for them for most of the strokes. So I decided to try my left hand just to see.....It wasn't that bad.

So, One Stroke flowers it is for me for this challenge! HA Cheating? Not really, but I'm good with it either way! Stroke work can be quite challenging in itself.

Stay tuned...I'll post my painting when it is complete. Maybe I'll do the same one with my right hand too, just for comparison....I can just haul out an old sample I suspect and then just do the new one with my left hand. Hmmm.....which flower to do?

I guess you should stay tuned for what exciting and innovative challenges we all come up with as time goes on. Who knows what we'll come up with. Any suggestions?

Friday Fun Fact - Painting Terminology I

Here is a brief list of common techniques we are using in Artist's Choice sessions....

Basecoat/Underpainting – the first stages of a painting in which the elements and tonal values of a composition are established.

Dry Brush – technique where you load your brush with very little paint and lightly skim the surface of the canvas to add colour, blend a colour, or soften a colour. You use a very light touch for this technique. Use this technique when you want to have a broken look. Do not use water.

Wash – used to intensify, soften, grey down or darken a colour in a subtle way. Apply quickly with a flat brush. Transparent colour applied over an opaque colour. Each layer must be dried before applying another layer. This mixture is made of water and a small amount of colour – Kool-Aid consistency.

Glaze – used to intensify, soften, grey down, or darken a colour more dramatically. Apply quickly with a flat brush. Transparent colour applied thinly over an opaque colour. Each layer must be dried before applying another layer. This mixture is made of colour and some water – thin glue or inky consistency.

Wet-on-Wet – technique where you blend colours together while the first application of paint is still wet. Commonly used in skies and water.

Friday Fun Fact - Mixing Paint Brands in Acrylic

In my own paintings, I regularly mix different brands of acrylic paints. I've only ever had one problem and could not tell if it was the paint (it was a heavy body acrylic) or if it was the canvas...

A few words of wisdom.....I only use artist or professional quality tube paints for my paintings. You will have certain brands you prefer (as I do) and sometimes it even depends on the paint colour which brand I like.

Some brands of paint have a matte finish and some are more glossy.....this is true even within one brand of paint (Open Heavy Body comes to mind for example). If this bothers you, you can always go over top of your finished painting with the appropriate acrylic sealer (spray or liquid).

And if you are trying out acrylic-based oils, I've been doing some reading on if you can mix them successfully with regular acrylics. Seems the thoughts are mostly no, but some say they've done it without trouble. Unfortunately we won't really know until the painting ages to see if there is flaking, separation or other issues. I wouldn't chance it....use one or the other for a painting.

Friday Fun Facts - Rule of Thirds & The Sweet Spots

The Rule of Thirds is one of the most popular rules in composition of a painting or photograph.

Imaginary lines are drawn dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. You place important elements of your composition where these lines intersect. The intersections are known as Sweet Spots, or Power Points.

Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

The main reason for observing the rule of thirds is to discourage placement of the subject at the center, or prevent a horizon from appearing to divide the picture in half.

As with most rules, it is made to be broken. This rule doesn't work on everything, but it generally adds more interest to a painting or photograph then if you placed the subject dead centre.

For example, in this picture I took in California in 2009, I placed the seagull in the bottom right sweet spot.



I purposely picked this photo to show you as it has a lot going on in the background. I positioned myself so that the boat in the background is NOT on a sweet spot. Then you would have competition in the photo for the viewer's attention. As the gull is closest to the viewer, it should be the only subject hitting a sweet spot.

That being said.....sometimes you do want to draw attention to something in the foreground and the background at the same time....this one was taken near Bonavista. You can use more than one sweet spot at a time, but don't use them all at once....you lose the effect!

And sometimes nature doesn't quite cooperate, so you can still create an interesting composition by "being close" to the sweet spots....these cone flowers were taken at Manitou Cliff Dwellings in Colorado in 2008....

And of course...always break the rules!!! When it makes sense of course (And when it's not illegal!) This is Brandywine Falls in British Columbia.

2011 - Second Quarter Update

So the start of the second quarter of the year has come and gone...but July has been quite busy our first show as Arts Northeast. Now that the show is underway (running until August 13) and the in-laws have visited, I can revisit my goals for 2011 to see how I'm progressing.....so from my January & March 2011 posts:

Not a bad start for the first half of 2011....I'm enjoying the painting...even if there have been alot of deadlines involved. So that is the main thing! Another update for the third quarter in October. Stay tuned!

The Grass is Greener - UPDATE

For those who have been following along, I thought I had completed the painting "The Grass is Greener"....but it just needed something else. I know, I usually love doing monochromatics, but with this one being so large, it just needed something.

For those who are familiar with colour theory, you will not be surprised to find out that I decided to paint a ladybug. Why, might you ask? Because green and red are complementary colours and will help to highlight one another, thus making something "pop" more.

The ladybug is also in a "sweet spot" of the painting....more on sweet spots in another post.

Arts Northeast Beginnings Now Open!

The Opening Reception was held on Sunday, July 24th from 2-5pm at the historic Masonic Temple. It was a lovely sunny day, despite the thunder, lightning and rain that started the day off.

Spirit of Newfoundland provided refreshments....the food was FABULOUS and the wine and juice was great as well. I think everyone went away with a nice snack after perusing the 40 pieces of art.

The exhibition and sale runs daily until August 13....drop by and check it out Monday-Friday 10am-4pm and weekends 1-4pm. Of course you can always see the artwork when you catch a show (now playing - Groovy and Patsy Cline).

The winners of an original piece of art (4 giveaways - one by each of us) will be announced at the end of the show. Stay tuned....see details at the Masonic Temple.

Arts Northeast - Beginnings has Opened!

Although the day started off with thunder, lightning and hard rain, the sun came out for the opening reception of Arts Northeast - Beginnings.

Thanks to all of my co-workers (former and current), students, friends, and my parents for taking the time out of their busy schedules to support me at the opening reception of Arts Northeast. It is greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.....

And thanks so much to Spirit of Newfoundland (especially Paul and Renee) for all of their help....the food was FABULOUS (yes, it deserves big boldness) and I heard the wine was great too (seeing I don't drink, I had to rely on others for the wine critique!).

Winners of the original paintings will be announced at the end of the show.

For those who could not make it to the opening - THERE IS STILL TIME!

The show runs until August 13, Hours are Monday-Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday & Sunday 1-4pm daily. And if you are there for one of Spirit of Newfoundland's fabulous shows (Feeling Groovy or A Closer Walk), you can still see the artwork as well!

The Day Before

So, this morning, the 4 artists (including myself) and some helpers, descended upon the historic Masonic Temple on Cathedral Street. With 40 pieces of art between us...ranging in size from 8" x 16" to 36" x 36" and various mediums, there is quite a splash of colour now gracing the walls of the main floor of the building.

I think we did a fine job putting the artwork up...no arguments or anything! And I can't believe how quickly we got everything accomplished!

Tomorrow is the big day! Beginnings is aptly titled as it is the beginning of something good....

One more painting to go....

Well sort of...one more to finish that needs to be framed for the show starting July 24. Two more to finish that don't need to be framed...well sort of for that as well.....

I'm heading to the framer tomorrow and will take the night off from painting and then will finish the others this weekend.....then I'll get to do some other things that need to get done!

Beginnings Opening Reception

Our art group, Arts Northeast, is having its inaugural exhibition and sale titled Beginnings starting July 24, 2011 at Masonic Temple, 6 Cathedral Street, St. John's, NL. The show runs for three weeks until Saturday, August 13th.

Our opening reception will be on that first day, Sunday, July24th from 2-5pm.

Everyone is welcome.....all four artists will be in attendance and there may even be some surprises.....

Arts Northeast marks its Beginnings with a summer exhibition

Beginnings marks the inaugural exhibition of a recently formed visual art group – Arts Northeast.  Artists Randy Blundon, Jeanette Jobson, Brenda Rowe, and Michelle Whitten LaCour created the group in 2011 to provide support and networking, as well as exhibition opportunities.

This summer exhibition, in the historic Masonic Temple, introduces ten original pieces of work from each artist.  Each artist shows their view on the natural world around them in subjects ranging from gyotaku fish prints and seascapes to florals and traditional landscapes.  Mediums encompass printmaking, mixed media, watercolours to oils and  present the viewer with the broad range of styles and experience that is evident in this group.

Catching Up

It has been too long since I last posted....a lot going on....including painting....

I have several unfinished paintings all being worked on simultaneously.....

• Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan, which has a brown center, not black funny enough)
• The Grass is Greener....family Gramineae (Poaceae). I had "finished" this one and posted it....but decided (along with some painting friends) that it needed something else...well a ladybug it is! Have to add one in....
• Concrete steps with fallen yellow/orange maple leaves (most likely Acer saccharum) on them
• a lighthouse from Pigeon Point, California
• rocks on a beach near Bay Roberts, with some Aseophyllum Nodosum (kelp) and a broken Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (sea urchin) with the Aristotle's lantern showing
• and the Arches, Utah painting (for me)....

PS - Had to get those scientific names in...lol

I also completed a painting as a gift for one of my goddaughters, who was received her first communion/confirmation last weekend. I'll post that in a separate blog.

In other painting news, we have officially formed our art group...ARTS NORTHEAST. We will be having our first show at Masonic Temple starting July 24....more details in a separate blog post. And we are in the process of confirming our second show. Very exciting and a lot of planning involved!

And in news unrelated to painting.....we have a new Shih Tzu puppy.....I'll post a pix of Taz also in another post.

The Royal Wedding - Friday Fun Fact

Today is a day for all Royal fans...including me....ROYAL SOFT-GRIP BRUSHES!!!!

They are my favourite brand of brushes....They are a very good price and are of excellent quality. They have a great range of brushes, from "regular" brushes (flats, liners, rounds, filberts) to "Specialty" brushes (fans, foliages).

I've had some of my Royal brushes for more than 10 years....and as many know, I'm not the best at giving my brushes a good cleaning (with Murphy's Oil Soap....see a previous Friday Fun Fact) after every painting session. These brushes hold up to my abuse!

So today after you have watched the Royal event over and over again and had your tea and crumpets, head out to your local craft and art supply store and try a Royal Soft-Grip brush. You'll like it!

The Grass is Indeed Greener....

And yes, some of you will read more into this statement...go for it! HA

I have been painting, although not getting as much accomplished as I wished....a lot of washes to build this piece up, so it took a while to dry in between coats. And the canvas is a gallery wrapped 30" x 40"!!!

But this is my latest painting....yes, more monochromatic...but perhaps a little more colourful than the last!

I have another painting almost finished, so hopefully I'll be able to post that one soon as well.....

2011 - First Quarter Update

As many of us are wokring diligently on year end activities at work, it is the end of the first quarter of 2011....a reminder to me to revisit my goals for 2011 to see how I'm progressing.....so from my January 2011 post:

"My focus will now get back to what it originally was...the production, marketing and sale of my own artwork. Most of my goals for 2011 can be subdivided into three main categories - learning activities, productivity, and visibility:"

Learning Activities:

Increase my knowledge of various painting techniques and styles through courses online and/or participate in local workshops or classes - I have signed up for a couple of online courses, so some progress here.

Work on further expanding my existing classes and workshops offered to students - Well, slight hiccup in this one....I had intended on continuing my classes with the City of St. John's past my current schedule which finishes in May....short version, the City seems to be changing some of it's rules and I do not agree with how they are handling things...so I have decided to move on in the fall. I will be increasing classes of my Artist's Choice and various Workshops in "the Shed" instead. Not exactly my original plan, but we'll have to go with it.

Research local art groups/organizations to determine benefits of memberships and learning opportunities - VANL looks promising, but have decided to hold off on joining until 2012.

Complete the studio and hold grand opening in the Fall - Now that the warmer weather is here (wishful thinking I suspect), work will continue in "The Shed".

Productivity:

Create a defined body of work using a theme of my choice for the purpose of an art show. At least 8 major paintings should be produced for this endeavour - Well, no theme unless you count lack of a theme, a theme! I have changed this goal a little which was a result of the formation of our own art group. My loose working terms right now are textures....The art show is booked for late July-early August for 3 weeks, so more painting must be completed. If I get 6 new paintings done for this show, I'll be happy/

Create at least one painting a month that is not part of the defined body of work or commissions - Month 4 and I'm just finishing off paintings 3 and 4 (There was one commission in there too). So on track.

Create more artwork that is focused on the market demands - Right now I've been picking subjects I like, so I'm not really focusing on market demands...YET.....seems at least one of my counterparts will be joining me at a Christmas Fair, so I decided today I have to paint some Christmas/Winter subjects....so sort of on track? I have an idea, sort of a theme...maybe I need to revise the goal above....it's a secret right now though.....

Visibility:

Increase my online presence through use of my website, facebook, blog, and venturing into sales online - Website updated and PayPal added, Blog is going well so far, Facebook has my Blog updates posted, and have secured one local online company, working on another local one that I have a commitment from, and also checking out some global print-on-demand sites.....

Increase my advertising for commissions using online advertising methods - Did post some online ads...got a few students, but no commissions.

Creation of an artist's group who will be focused on increasing our visibility and also in sharing meaningful critiques and knowledge - Well underway, a somewhat slow start, but we have a group of 4 now and have our first show booked (mentioned above) and working on 1-2 more for this year. Have a plan for a proposal for 2012. Very Excited...more details to follow.

Participate in more public showcases - I have a few venues secured....looking at a few more.....

Submit artwork to juried and non-juried art competitions in the Province and globally - Not yet.

Not a bad start for the first quarter of 2011....now to keep on track.....

Friday Fun Fact - Q-Tips

Sorry...Friday has come and gone...but a tip (no pun intended) is ready to go....

Q-Tips can be your best friend when painting.....

Sometimes you paint something you shouldn't....quickly wet a Q-Tip and lightly rub over the paint you don't want to stay on your painting. As long as you get the paint before it has completely dried, you can remove your boo boo.

However, if you think Q-Tips can only help you when things go wrong, think again.....

You can actually paint using a Q-Tip! Small berries are quick and easy with the end of a Q-Tip that has been dipped in one (or two) colours of paint. Press the Q-Tip straight down firmly and give a slight twist when lifting. Presto - a berry!

I've also used a Q-Tip to lightly bend the edge of a colour into another when applying a new colour over top of an existing dry colour.

I'm sure there are many other painting-related uses for Q-Tips.....Please share!!!

It's been a while.....

Since I posted....so much going on....I've got 2 paintings going at once...one of a Sand Ladder from a pix courtesy of a great photograher and biologist from Ontario (Melanie) and the second of a close-up of grass with dew on the blades from a pix courtesy of a friend of my Aunt Michele in Ontario (Shannon). I see a pattern here....pix not taken by me and all taken by people in Ontario...interesting!

Some big plans are shaping up for some exhibits...stay tuned for more on the shows at a later date....planning art exhibitions takes a lot more time than one would think....especially when you are trying to do it right!

Hopefully the Sand Ladder will be posted on the blog by the end of this week....the grass painting is rather large...30" x 40", so it will take a little while to get that one finished.

And when that one is complete, on to a pix of Pouch Cove (I took this pix!).

I'll be getting back to the Friday Fun Facts starting this week as well....March was just MADNESS!!! (Thanks to those who supported the March Madness Sale!!!)

Friday Fun Fact - Painting Safety

A Material Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS as it is commonly known, is a document that contains information intended to describe product hazards, how to use our products safely, what to do if accidents should occur, how to recognize symptoms of overexposure, and what to do if such incidents occur.

I work with acrylic paints, and even though they are water-based products and most are non-toxic, it is still a good idea to find the MSDS sheet for your brand(s) of paint and have a look....it would be more important to know this information with oil paints and solvents.

I also like to have an eye-wash station nearby as you can occasionally get paint in your eye....it won't hurt but it is best to wash it out as quickly as possible. I have had to stick my head under the kitchen sink and wash my eye out....the eye-wash station is definitely easier...

Safety should be first in all aspects of our lives....including painting!

Friday Fun Facts - Straight Lines

You can use painter's tape to create a straight line. Sometimes the paint will bleed underneath the edge of the tape, so have damp q-tip ready for touch ups and to remove the excess paint while it is still wet.

Middle Cove - Part 3 - Finished!

I have completed the Middle Cove painting....now to name it! Suggestions are welcome.

I'll be dropping it off for framing and printing in the next day or so....Giclee prints will be available in approximately 2 weeks!!! I'm not sure what sizes I'm going to print this one in, so prices can't be determined until I figure out sizes.....

If you may remember, last year I had a contest of sorts for people to submit their photos and an independent judge (Don Short) picked the winning photo! Now, I had picked my top 3 in order and they matched his exactly (I told him this after he picked). Great minds think alike! Or perhaps truth be told, I have learnt a lot from Don over the years and this is the reason we picked the same photo. I may paint numbers 2 and 3 as well sometime in the future..stay tuned....

So here it is, Middle Cove finished and yet unnamed....Suggestions are welcome.

Middle Cove - Part 2

Rocks....beach rocks....lots and lots of beach rocks.....tedious yet so rewarding when completed.

I enjoyed painting these more than I thought I would. So I was pleasantly surprised. Not sure I'd want to tackle another similar painting in the next few weeks, but I am looking forward to my next beach rock painting - whenever that might be.

I completed the drawing of the young boy waiting for the capelin to arrive before I painted the rocks, but you can see some "cheating" behind where the boy will eventually sit in the painting. I spent some time doing the "squiggles" before I started painting the beach rocks. (Shout out to Don Short for the tip!!!) This made placing the rocks much easier as you could make rocks out of the squiggles. You don't have to exactly follow the squiggles, but I think it went alot faster than if I was free-handing them one at a time. I used 6 tones/shades plus white and payne's grey to paint the rocks.

So obviously I have to paint the young boy, some capelin fishing accessories, and the waves breaking.....that should be Part 3 I would suspect. Hopefully you will have Part 3 as the final chapter on this painting in the next few days....

Friday Fun Facts - Blending

Because acrylics dry fast, you will need to work fast to blend colours. Using a bit more water in your brush than usual will assist in creating a more natural blend of your colours.

Middle Cove - Part 1

I manged to fit in some painting on the Middle Cove pix that is WAY overdue....A good start has been gotten...I actually have a little bit more done now than what this photo shows, but so far I am pleased.....the beach rocks are next. These may be a challenge for me...not because they are hard, but the obsessive part of me will have a hard time with so much detail. I love detail but I have to be careful not to get too carried away in the painting. I have to remember to step back often and view the entire painting in perspective. That is always a good practice and I have to remind myself sometimes to do that.

Here is the first stage.....sky and ocean complete....the lighting wasn't very good, so you can't quite get the yellows and pinks in the sky. Maybe next photo will have more natural lighting.

Friday Fun Facts - Murphy's Oil Soap

Sorry, I know I'm a day late.....a lot going on yesterday.....here's this week's tip.

Use Murphy's Oil Soap (make sure it is the soap version) to clean your brushes. Rub some MOS into your brush on the palm of your hand to release the paint from the brush. Rinse in warm water and repeat until you do not see traces of paint colour coming out of the brush.

Then, rub some more MOS into the brush and then grab the end of the bristles between your thumb and forefinger and gently move the bristles from side to side. Rinse and repeat as necessary. This process releases the paint that accumulates near the ferrule (metal casing that attaches the bristles to the handle) which is more difficult to remove.

If you are patient enough, you can restore an older brush with a build up of paint to a somewhat new-like condition. Cleaning your brushes after each painting session when the paint is still wet will extend the life of your brushes.

The Puffin - Completed

As promised...the finished Puffin painting. I did enjoy painting it....so to me it doesn't matter if someone tells me it won't sell. However, I would certainly like to prove them wrong in this case....

Friday Fun Fact - Pre-Painting Studies

Completing a small sketch or painting or just practicing one specific element before you put brush to your canvas can aid you in developing your painting.

The Arches National Park, UTAH - Part 1

In 2008 we (I, my husband, my parents, and our 11-year old Shih Tzu Cuddles) embarked upon a 30-day 25 state/5 provinces driving tour. I think I can say with certainty that Utah, especially the Arches National Park, was the #1 memory of our entire trip for all of us, perhaps even Cuddles as a very nice vet saved her life in Utah.

The Arches has over 2000 arches and other spectacular rock formations within its boundaries. We enjoyed Utah and its numerous national parks, that we have all returned to Utah at different times since 2008 to explore more of its treasures. We are even planning to return again, hopefully sometime this year.

For those movie buffs, you may know that the Arches was the opening scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as well as Austin Powers 3. Other locations in Utah have also been the backdrop for numerous Hollywood movies, especially the old westerns.

One of my fav pix is found early in the 76,518 acres of the park...See the pix below....

The Three Gossips are to your left, followed by Sheep Rock and on the right are Tower of Babel and the Organ. All of which make up the Courthouse.

I decided in 2009 to paint the above pix. I've had the custom-made gallery canvas (30 inches x 70 inches) for many months in my living room....blank. Late last year, I put some colour on it. There is a fair amount of detail needed in the rock formations....the canvas is too large to stand on my easels so I have to paint it when it is flat on the kitchen table. This creates a challenge as you can't lean on the canvas, so it has been a challenge to paint comfortably. So progress stopped before the holidays and it is a challenge to get it back out as then we have no kitchen table to use!

I've decided I have to finish the Middle Cove painting before I get back to the Utah one....but I wanted to show you my progress to date....I've only gotten some of the shadows in on the right side of the canvas painted although I have drawn all the formations in with chaulk. Getting the scale right in order to get the formations drawn in was its own challenge as well!

2011 Goals

I've always had goals for my painting, I've just never put them down on paper. In order to hold myself more accountable for my goals, I have decided not only to write them down (which I did a couple of weeks ago very early in 2011) but to post them publicly. I intend on reviewing them at least quarterly to keep myself on track.

Another artist friend of mine has inspired me and encouraged me to complete this task.  We have similar goals, as one might expect from like-minded people.

In the last few years, I have focused on expanding my teaching with the City of St. John's, which has worked quite well. I have also embarked upon setting up my own studio space which is a major project to say the least. The "shed" as it is affectionately known, is still a work in progress but is functional for classes with heat and light. Grand opening will be scheduled for the Fall 2011....one of my goals listed below. My focus will now get back to what it originally was...the production, marketing and sale of my own artwork.

Most of my goals for 2011 can be subdivided into three main categories - learning activities, productivity, and visibility:

Learning Activities:

Increase my knowledge of various painting techniques and styles through courses online and/or participate in local workshops or classes.

Work on further expanding my existing classes and workshops offered to students.

Research local art groups/organizations to determine benefits of memberships and learning opportunities.

Complete the studio and hold grand opening in the Fall.

Productivity:

Create a defined body of work using a theme of my choice for the purpose of an art show. At least 8 major paintings should be produced for this endeavour.

Create at least one painting a month that is not part of the defined body of work or commissions.

Create more artwork that is focused on the market demands.

Visibility:

Increase my online presence through use of my website, facebook, blog, and venturing into sales online.

Increase my advertising for commissions using online advertising methods.

Creation of an artist's group who will be focused on increasing our visibility and also in sharing meaningful critiques and knowledge.

Participate in more public showcases.

Submit artwork to juried and non-juried art competitions in the Province and globally.

One goal doesn't fit exactly into either of the three categories above....create an artist's statement. I have actually already completed this task and is posted on my blog.

Some of the above goals have already been started. Since this is only the end of the second full week in 2011, I think I have made a great start.

I encourage my readers to keep me mindful of my goals and on the right track for 2011. If there are any goals you think I have missed, please let me know your thoughts!
