Last Painting of 2013?

Maybe, maybe not...it might be the last painting of 2013 but gets finished in 2014...it all depends on how much time I have to myself in the next few days.

But the sun came out here today for a little while (in between snowstorms..another scheduled for tomorrow), so I put a nice sunny painting back up on the large easel.

I don't have much done except basecoating in the major shapes yet....But it is certainly a nice bright change from snow, more snow and freezing cold temps!

May have a snow day yet tomorrow from work....so we'll see if any painting gets done then.

This painting is one of the few flowers that I didn't take the photograph of....thanks to my Aunt Michele's friend Shannon who entered this unique view of a sunflower into one of my contests and was kind enough to give me permission to paint it.

Keep checking back to see the progress on this painting. I'll probably need some help naming it as well! Hint hint!

Fall has Arrived and Painting is at the Forefront

It's been a while since I've had a chance to post....summer weather, vacation planning and then actual vacation has made me remiss in posting. I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer.

However, I haven't been absent from my artwork or planning for Fall events! I'm going to catch you up quickly and let you in on some secrets coming soon!

My art group Arts Northeast have been busy planning an event which is confirmed for December 1st. More details on this event will follow in the next weeks.

I was busy painting several paintings for a gallery (by request of the gallery) and a couple of commission paintings were in the works as well. One of these commissions is complete and in the hands of the new owners and the other is a large mural which is still in the planning stages...this looks like it will be my winter project.

Family vacation planning and then the actual three week vacation took up some of August and all of September. Safely home yesterday and I have started in earnest confirming class registrations for next week.

While on vacation, I was thinking of my plans for the Fall. Well, thinking of this in between purchasing new paint supplies while away. Some great finds and have even managed to use some of them while on vacation. I'll be posting my watercolour painting of a chickadee from my travels in the next day or so.

I've planned a few contests to reward my students and also my loyal followers and customers. More details on these contests will be released in the next few days and weeks as well!

And I'm working on an exciting event for November...I'll be releasing info on this event later in October.

And my quarterly newsletter is due out in October as well.

I look forward to posting more often now that Fall is upon us and sharing with you the events, artwork and other news with you on a more regular basis.

Cheers!

304 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico - New Artwork

Santa Fe doors are like no doors anywhere else....they are all very unique. Most of the walking tours mention the doors numerous times. It's not anything I can describe, you have to see it to believe it.

My favourite door was at 304 Canyon Road....so I had to eventually paint it!

I took some artist license on cleaning up the foliage next to the door so that the focus would be on the door itself.

Many of the doors in Santa Fe and in New Mexico in general, lead to the garden and is not the front door to the house itself, which is the case for this door.

Some other doors I found on Canyon Road.....

The Grass is Greener

Today only on ArtBomb....The Grass is Greener. Special starting bid price.

Almost everyone knows the saying "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence", which means that someone's perception of another's circumstances is seen as more desirable than one's own reality. Well this ladybug doesn't think so and is thinking everything is bright and green enough right here! I hope this painting brings enough green to your life everyday and you will be as content as the ladybug and will not need to ponder what lies on the other side of the fence.

Truly Canadian

Today on ArtBomb is my painting "Truly Canadian" for a special starting bid in honour of Canada Day.

Being Canadian means different things to different people. Here are my musings as to why I painted this one....

"Truly Canadian"
Acrylic - 2011
24" x 36"

In celebration of Canada Day, east coast artist, Brenda Rowe thought this work honoured our Canadian heritage best.

"The Maple Leaf has been a symbol of Canada from as early as 1700. In the 1800's organizations, newspapers, military, coat of arms, and currency all contained the maple leaf. "Maple Leaf Forever" was considered the national song for many decades in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The photo I took of maple leaves in fall on the steps near the courthouse here in St. John's Newfoundland, always make me think of Canada. I always knew I would have to paint this photo. Maple leaves are "Truly Canadian"."

Check out my symbol of Canada today on ArtBomb. And don't forget to remember what Canada means to you this weekend.

Hint of Yellow Original Painting Available for First Time

Today on ArtBomb, "Hint of Yellow" ONE DAY ONLY! Special Pricing!!!

This painting was from a photo I took in a pond, just as you head down towards Flatrock on Wind Gap Road. I was on my way to take photos for "Summer in Flatrock" commission. The frogs were in full singing voice, yet we could not see even one.

There was also a duck and her brood further out in the pond, but I only had eyes for the lilypads. I've always loved lily pads, especially the yellow ones that are most common here in Newfoundland.

So I needed a large painting for my front entrance of the house and thought this would be perfect! After many hours of painting, the lilypads were completed. I chose a gallery canvas (my first of many gallery canvases) as I wanted to paint around the edges (which is uncommon, but I love to do it on all of my gallery canvases).

I had no intention of selling "Hint of Yellow" (shout out to my sis-in-law Lisa for naming this one). But Teri of ArtBomb loved it so much, she convinced me to let it come out of my private collection just for ArtBomb.

Check out "Hint of Yellow" TODAY ONLY on ArtBomb. And I'm excited to announce I've got another painting with ArtBomb on June 27th....stay tuned!

Sneak Peek....New Flower...Yet Untitled

Well, my previously yellow 24" x 30" canvas changed colour...to a nice light purple. Just right for building layers of darker shades of purple to create an up close and personal view of a flower.

I just finished the last layers of the painting....you are going to see the first photo of it!

Surprise...it's monochromatic!

So all that is left to do is sign it, drop it off to be framed and title it...Yes, I need a NAME for it!!!

So, I'm asking for your help. Submit your title suggestions to me by May 31st. Not only will you have the distinction of having a painting with your suggested title on it, but I'll throw in an 8" x 10" print of "Canada Lily", valued at $20.

So put your thinking cap on!!!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter to everyone! I know Easter means different things to different people and just one symbol usually will not suffice.

My group, Arts Northeast, completed an Easter challenge on what Easter symbolizes. I tried to choose something I didn't think anyone else would pick, although I had no idea what anyone would pick. Well, it worked...and no one picked the same thing!

I decided to dabble in the digital realm again, this time producing an Easter Basket.

A friendly reminder that my SALE ends today on my website on Original Artwork. Tomorrow, I'll be updating my website with something new...stay tuned!

Icicle Shadows - New Painting in Monochromatic

A friend gave me permission to paint from a photograph she had....I was fascinated by the shadows the icicles were casting on the houses. I HAD to paint it!

Shocker - it's monochromatic! This time, it wasn't my choice, that was how the picture was taken. Sepia (browns) were the "colours" in the photo, so that is how I painted it.

I Heart Valentine's Day!

One of my fellow Arts Northeast members threw us a challenge 2 days ago...create artwork with heart as the theme. So I did....

I wanted to do a shadowed heart on white paper with colour surrounding it.

So I proceeded to tear a heart out of art paper and placed it on another sheet of art paper. Then I used various colours and techniques to apply the colours.

When I was finished, I had 2 pieces of artwork - the shadowed heart I had intended to complete, and the hand-torn heart itself!

"Shadowed Heart"

"I Heart Colour"

I think I like "I Heart Colour" best. I also had created a monotype print a few months back that is also Valentine's Day related....

"Shades of Love"

I hope you had a great Valentine's Day and I hope you enjoyed my holiday themed artwork!

Palette Knife Painting Adventure

A few weeks ago, my fellow artists of Arts Northeast got together to explore some artwork creating using only our palette knives.

For someone like me, who enjoys painting details (like in my Swallowtail), palette knife painting is somewhat out of my comfort zone, as it is usually a more loose style of painting.

I managed to produce one finished painting of a yellow dory (below) and started an accompanying painting of an orange punt. Once I got into it, I didn't mind it too badly and would like to try some more paintings using this technique. A larger piece would probably be better, as the canvas I was using was 6" rounds.

Stay tuned for some abstract paintings from this weekend's adventure with the ladies in Arts Northeast! Really outside my comfort zone, so we'll see how that goes!!!

2013 Artist Goals

Below you will find the list of what I am striving to accomplish in 2013 with my artwork.
This year, I'm going to focus more on learning activities....there will be other goals, but they will fall in place behind learning and practicing.

2013 Goals
I will participate in several online courses or local workshops. My goal is at least 6 during the year.

Work with the other members of Arts Northeast to hold our "create and learn together" monthly meetings. We have a schedule complete for the first half of 2013, with most of that being artwork opportunities, but some marketing as well.

Get back to Art Basics....practice these. And create some ePub books to share online as I explore the basics again. Check out my website to download the 2 ePubs (Colour Wheel Theory and Brushes) that I have already completed - for free!

Go outside my "comfort zone" more often when exploring and producing artwork.

Work on the defined body of work that I have already started.

Maintain my presence in the Galleries where I am already represented.

Participate in at least one exhibition and sale with Arts Northeast.

Submit artwork to juried and non-juried art competitions/exhibits locally and globally.

12 Days of Artwork - Day 12

Day 12....It was hard to pick only 12. This one has already gone to live at a new home, and I am happy for that...but I was very partial to this piece, so I was also sad to see it go. Thanks to Five Island Gallery in Tors Cove, NL for representing my artwork and finding a new home for "Afloat".

I hope you have enjoyed my favourite paintings of 2012. I'm looking forward to what 2013 will bring! Stay tuned.....

12 Days of Artwork - Day 11

The way light hits the cliffs is very striking....especially at dawn. This painting is inspired by the cliffs that I can see from my house in Torbay.

It is one of my favourites from 2012...it is listed on Day #11, but I think if I was truly ranking them in order, it would be much higher on the list.

"Breaking Dawn"
8" x 10"

This painting is framed and is available at House of Diamonds Art Gallery, 1 Main Street, Glovertown, NL.

12 Days of Artwork - Day 10

Another monotype print has made it into the favourite list for 2012. This time, the subject is the natural world found in the sea, or in this case at the seashore. Sea stars and scallops in the sand.

"Sandy Shells"
6" x 6"

This unframed original monotype print on glossy velin paper is available for purchase. Regular price is $25...and for a few days, until January 6th, it will be available for only $20.

Thursday, January 3, 2013

12 Days of Artwork - Day 9

Cape Spear....the most easterly point in North America. The Portuguese named this location "Cabo da Esperança" which means "cape of hope", which became "Cap d'Espoir" in French and finally "Cape Spear".

As many of you know, I love lighthouses and enjoy painting them....this is my 5th lighthouse that I have painted. I guess it should have been my favourite painting #5 of 2012...but it is #9 instead.

"Cape Spear"
9" x 12"

This painting is framed and is listed at $225. Until the end of the 12 days of Christmas (January 6th, 2013), I be offering it for only $185.

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

12 Days of Artwork - Day 8

The wild west...the last frontier...America's western frontier has been a vital part of the country's history. We have had the opportunity to travel through much of America's wild west by car...and one of the most recognizable areas is Monument Valley. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best known films, including many John Wayne movies. You may even recognize the are from the movie Forrest Gump.

The trip where we visited Monument Valley was a great trip and I really enjoyed painting a piece from my photos of the area. So this is #8 of my favourite artworks in 2012.

"Wild West"
5" x 10"

I'm of two minds on selling this piece...the regular pricing is $120 for this painting (on gallery canvas). But until January 6, 2012, I'm going to offer it for only $100. But I think if it doesn't sell by then, I'll be taking it off the market. So best get it now before I change my mind!

12 Days of Artwork - Day 7

Wishes.....everyone has them....for themselves and for their friends and family. Remembering back to childhood, when everything was much easier, we wished on the mature silvery-white sees of the dandelion.

This was my first painting of 2012, so it is not surprising to me that it has made my 12 favourite pieces of artwork list for this year. This painting was featured in the first blog post of 2012....check it out here.

"Wishes"
8" x 8"

Another painting available at House of Diamonds Art Gallery, 1 Main Street, Glovertown, NL. This one is painted on gallery canvas.
